SBC - Pacbell and Nevada Bell Configuration Page

Note: Anyone switching from an Alcatel 1000 to a Zoom or most other DSL Manufacturers would have to use a new Phone line cable from the Modem to the Phone Jack as the Alcatel 1000 units swapped the outside pair of wires with inside while no Manufacturers do that anymore.

SBC DSL Users

Don't use the CD that comes with the SBC Install Kit, the CD installs all kinds of useless programming

on your Computer that can slow your machine down and gives access to your information away that you

may not want given away.

Here is a link to a site that details how to avoind using the SBC install CD

[Modem] Pacbell/SBC static IP and Zoom X5 Modem
I am a "legacy" Pacbell DSL subscriber with a static IP address and an Alcatel ADSL 1000 modem. I've had this service since mid-1999. Shortly after, I added an Xsense router, so the router is configured with my IP address, etc., and all my connections to the router use DHCP. This has and continues to work fine, except I'm tired of two big, relatively bulky devices.

So, I bought a zoom X5 DSL modem/router. So far, I've been unable to configure it properly. I've entered my IP address, subnet, gateway and primary & secondary DNS. However, I'm uncertain about the VPI setting (0 or 8); encapsulation setting; and bridge setting. Also, can I just attach the new modem to my prior DSL connection, which is downstream from the Alcatel splitter. Thanks for any suggestions.

So far, calls to Pacbell and zoom have been useless. Thanks...keithsg

Re: [Modem] Pacbell/SBC static IP and Zoom X5 Modem
OK, from the other posts here, you are most likely using PPPoA vrs PPPoE.

Looking at the ADSL_X5_5554.pdf ( »www.zoom.com/graphics/datasheets/adsl/ADSL_X5_5554.pdf ) data sheet, it doesn't say if it supports PPPoA.

As for the user manual (»www.zoom.com/documentation/adsl/5554_UsersManual_Eng.pdf )
Take a look at page 5, for VPI, VCI, and Encapsulation. But look at the note at the bottom of the page.

Page 11 says to get the settings from your provider (You haven't been able to gets those, from what I understand from your msg.) So???? Not sure what else.

I am thinking you need to contact one of the Techs here using IM.

This link may help. It's to a FAQ. Hope it works properly.

[Delete that] It just sunk in that you were legacy static.

Since you are using the Alcatel 1000, the VPI setting is 8 and encapsulation is RFC 1483 Bridged Ethernet. The Alcatel 1000 uses line 2, you will need to rewire the jack or get an adapter to swap line 1 and line 2.

Re: [Modem] Pacbell/SBC static IP and Zoom X5 Modem
Thank you. One additional question: should I enable/disable the "Bridge" setting? I will try this as soon as I have a chance to rewire the connection. Thanks again...keith

Re: [Modem] Pacbell/SBC static IP and Zoom X5 Modem
Update: I tried the following settings on the X5:

VPI 8
VCI 35
Encapsulation 1483 bridged LLC
Bridge Enabled (I also tried "disabled")

I connected the modem via line 1--actually I used a "phone" port on my DSL line

That done, I am still unable to get the modem to connect. I will keep trying...keith

Your older modem, the Alcatel 1000, was wired on Line 2. You need to take some action at the jack to get your new modem to synch. You might be able to re-wire the jack off of the Yellow Black pair and onto the Red Green pair, you can get a line 1 line 2 "T" adaptor and plug your current modem into line 2, or you can also get a "line swapper" that will swap line one and line 2.

I also have an X5, had it working with the default plus , I think, Classic over IP. BUT I had to reset the modem and now after entering this setting it did not work.

Did you mange to find the correct settings?

I know the vci/vpi are 0/35

Yep, you can't just use the phone port since the DSL signal already splitted RIGHT at the phone box outside, and none of your phone ports carry DSL signal any more.

You will need something picture above and plug in to the DSL jack and play around with the "holes" on that "2-line adaptor" (available from Radio Shack) connect to your modem a bit to get "dsl light=on",etc...

Re: [Modem] Pacbell/SBC static IP and Zoom X5 Modem

Well, the zoom modem is now working. The settings are as above:
VPI-8, VCI-35, Encapsulation-1483 Bridged LLC

The final trick was using the adaptor allowing me to bring the line 2 signal to line 1.

Thanks to all for your assistance...keith
