DSL Vs. Cable
DSL poised for takeover?
In the latest round of DSL vs, Cable, the Cable industry maintains their sixty-four percent market share in the States, but analysts claim DSL is readying itself for a percentage grab. Major cable providers have shown slowed growth in recent months, while DSL providers are growing thanks to price reductions and new speed packages. Analysts in this Reuters article argue that while cable is well positioned, the next "wave" in the broadband battle could see DSL making up some serious ground.
Suggesting the cable industry isn't sleeping well at night is probably premature; though SBC's recent speed increases should keep consumer's seeing pricing and speed improvements through 2004. This year should see several cable companies offering 256kbps tiers to compete with DSL "lite" offerings. No matter what Reuters or analysts indicate, you'll know DSL is posing a serious threat when cable providers are forced to lower the cost of their standard 2-3Mbps offerings.
With the market seeing plenty of changes the past six months, it's time to ask the age old question in our latest poll: DSL or Cable?

NEW YORK - As the market for high-speed Internet connections moves into many American homes, telephone companies are finally starting to take market share from once-dominant cable companies.
The top U.S. cable operators all reported slower growth in the last quarter among new consumers signing up for high-speed Internet service.
Meanwhile, the top telephone companies offering high-speed Internet access are experiencing growth reminiscent of cable's heyday in 2002 and early 2003.
