Zoom Model 5551 Is Now Acceptable for Deployment on the Verizon ADSL Data Network

BOSTON, MA--(MARKET WIRE)--Jul 28, 2003 -- Zoom Telephonics, Inc. (NasdaqSC:ZOOM - News) announced today that it has received notice from Verizon that the Zoom Model 5551 has successfully completed Verizon's extensive series of ADSL modem compatibility and interoperability tests. The tests were performed to assure interoperability with all of Verizon's deployed DSL platforms. Upon completion of testing, Verizon System Integration and Testing Laboratories approved the 5551 for deployment on the Verizon ADSL Data Network.
The 5551 was tested for interoperability with all five of Verizon's deployed DSL platforms -- the Alcatel Asam 7300, Alcatel Asam 1000, Alcatel Litespan 2300, AFC AccessMax, and Catena CNX-5 DSLAMs. Tests were performed for operation over telephone loop distance ranges between 5,000 and 18,000 feet, with a range of line impairments including bridge taps and white, metallic, and mixed noise.

Successful completion of the Verizon tests means that the Zoom Model 5551 will be added to Verizon's approved ADSL modem list. That means that Internet Service Providers affiliated with Verizon may offer it to their customers with the assurance that Verizon's DSL network supports the use of the 5551.

"The successful completion of Verizon testing is an important milestone in our effort to expand our ADSL opportunities by demonstrating interoperability with the most commonly deployed ADSL systems worldwide," said Frank Manning, Zoom's President and CEO. "This testing proved that our ADSL modems are not only highly compatible with a variety of systems, but also that they perform well in difficult circumstances."

The Model 5551 is a complete solution, including the modem hardware with built-in router and NAT firewall security, cables, and documentation. The 5551 provides Internet access to one or more computers through its Ethernet and USB ports, and can be used with a wide range of software and computer operating systems. The Ethernet port lets a user plug in virtually any computer, an Xbox or other gaming machine, a hub, or a wireless access point. The USB port can be used to connect to a Windows computer. The Ethernet and USB ports can be used concurrently.

The 5551 provides shared Internet access for up to 253 concurrent users when plugged into a network hub or wireless LAN access point. It features a graphical interface that allows a user, a network manager, or an Internet Service Provider with the correct password to monitor the modem using a Web browser. The 5551has two RJ-11 jacks, including one jack with a built-in filter for use with a telephone, answering machine or fax machine. Zoom backs the 5551 with a two-year warranty, U.S. and European multi-lingual support teams, and over twenty years of experience as a manufacturer of data communications products. Zoom ADSL products are provided with multi-lingual documentation in English, Spanish, French, Portuguese, Dutch and Danish.
